Dreary week...

It's been rainy all week long. I ran 15 miles on the treadmill on Monday. Wednesday I managed to get in an 8 mile run in between rain storms in Skagway. Along the way I ran by Brett Lyons, my cast mate on the ship.

You can see, we're running along the highway.

It's not a busy highway at all, but it's sometimes adventurous.

The only vehicles that ever seem to pass along on the road are tour busses.

My wife, Jeannie, doesn't like it. Running next to the highway makes her nervous. The real fear for her though is that she thinks there are bears hiding in the forest waiting to pounce on us when we run by.

I keep my eyes peeled, but I haven't seen any bears by the road at all. It's a shame really, because I really want to see a best in the wild. We run next to a large stream and I always run through there hoping to see a bear feeding there.

We saw a couple of bears yesterday as we were sailing through glacier bay. I had to look at them through binoculars and they were far away so they were very small.

I want to see one close up!

I know that's crazy, because bears are fast and might be able to chase me down. I'd like to think though that these bears have not been training for a marathon. If I can keep a steady pace, I figure I'll lose him when he stops for water at the 12 mile marker.

Logging miles...

I ran 35 miles this week.

14 on Monday.  8 on Wednesday.  8 on Friday.  5 on Saturday.

35 miles in a week is a little more than I'm used to.  Today my legs feel tired.

The weather in Alaska has been nice.  It's warmed up, but it's very comfortable run in.

Wednesdays are the best running days for me.
I do a medium or long run, shower and then spend the afternoon at Glacier Smoothie shop.  It's a casual, little coffee/smoothie shop where I can browse the internet and stare out the window.

Here's something...Did you know they don't put the "'s" on the Reese's Peanut Butter Cups in Canada?

Crazy.

Beyond the base...

I ran 33 miles last week. I hadn't planned on doing it, it just happened.

On Monday, I ran 10 miles in the pouring rain in Juneau. It was cold and rainy and I had to run up and down mountainous terrain. I'm not used to that.

On Tuesday, Jeannie ran with me.

She liked the scenery, but didn't like the wind and hills. Both were crazy on Tuesday.

On Wednesday I ran while we navigated through Glacier Park. This is what I see from my treadmill as I run.

This bird watched me as I ran.

I have to say, riding on this cruise ship as we circle through Alaska is sometimes odd. I see these gorgeous pristine mountains in the background as people wolf down chili dogs on the water slide.

We're close to 18 weeks out from the marathon. I've got a strong base and now have to start stretching my runs. In the past couple of months I haven't done a run beyond 13 miles. It's time to start racking up some miles
